Car window takes the impact upon itself and shields the occupants from being forced out of the car. In addition, it may also prove to be a liability during riots and mobs. A broken window not only impedes the appearance of your car, but it also causes a threat to the valuables inside your car, as well as the car itself.

If you are not certain whether your car needs a glass repair or a replacement, you can contact a professional advisor and check whether the damage can be repaired proficiently or not. Sometimes, the cost of repair of the car glass may be much closer to the cost of a new glass. In that case, you should definitely choose a replacement. Repair can never be better than a car window replacement.

In most cases, damages positioned less than 3 inches from the edge has to be fixed through car window replacement only. If you have decided to get your car window replacement, you must know that it can be done easily by you, without any professional help. You just need to have the tools needed for this like vacuum, tarp and some hand tools.

Just follow these steps on how to replace a car window:

First, you have to safely remove the panel of the car door and peel the plastic sheet beneath the panel. Detach the pieces of old glasses with the help of vacuum cleaner and gloves.

Fit in the new car window with the help of a 2 inches wide slot present on the door panel’s top. In this process, you will have to unbolt some of the door panel bolts so that more space is available to fit in the glass.

Replace the weather stripping and bracket bolts on the door panel and make sure that the car glass is aligned properly. Get the panel back aligned to the window crank.

I have always been saying that to repair any part of the vehicle, you need to have knowledge of spare parts and you should know the technique of handling them However, here, you need not be a technical person or someone who is really an expert at handling vehicle repair! All you need is the knowledge of window replacement procedure and most importantly, common sense! I’m sure you have all this in you and now you simply need to understand the procedure.

If you have met an accident and broken your car window in the recent past, then the first thing you would like to do is get it repaired. Technology has become so advanced that even a long crack can be mended in such a way that no one will be able to guess that something had ever gone wrong with the pane. But at times, you may need to consider car window replacement because the damage done to the car window is beyond repair or it has been repaired many times.

Car window replacement can be expensive. Not only do you pay for the window, but also for the time of a professional glass company to set it up. With some essential hand tools, a replacement window and a little time, you can replace the window yourself.

Cost to replace car window largely depends upon the degree of damage. Minor cracks or chips do not entail replacing the entire car window. The repair work may cause you anywhere around USD 20 for in-store service and USD 55 for mobile service, per chip. Be ready to shell another USD 20 for every additional piece of glass that you have broken. Crack repair charges also vary depending upon the length of the crack. A crack of up to 12 inches may cost you about USD 50 – USD 59, while cost for a longer crack is about USD 59 – USD 69. Usually, it is suggested that you replace the car window, if you have a crack that is longer than 24 inches. It is impossible to repair something as long as that without compromising on the safety.

In addition, you can try getting the car window replacement on Internet. It might be a bit cheaper actually. As in the previous case, you have to provide the essential information and you’ll get the car window replacement that you need.

Search the yellow pages to find the companies that do business in car window replacement. Dial a few companies and ask them for the quotes. You can also visit their websites and get the quotes instantly. Also inquire about their service charges and other deductibles. Select the company that suits you the best and fix an appointment with them. Make sure you are having all the requisite information at hand. Fix a suitable time with them so that they can come to your home or office for replacement of the window.

Although every car owner wants to take a good care of his/her vehicle to add worth to the interiors of his or her vehicle, they generally overlook small chips and scratches on the window that could bring about great harm to their life in the event of an accident. Most car owners don’t know that even a small chip could become an immense problem over a period of time.

As you drive down the road, a small piece of gravel can hit your window and leave a chip. No matter how expensive your window is, the glass is still susceptible to chips. While it may be tempting to leave the chip alone, this can ultimately cause a crack that will necessitate a full window replacement

To save money, you can pick up a window chip repair kit at most retailers and fill the window chip before it gets to that point.

1. Clean out the hole of the window chip with a pin. Dig out any dirt as a clean hole will fill and adhere better than a dirty one. Wipe the surrounding glass with a dry cloth or towel to remove any other dirt.

2. Remove the paper backing on the adhesive strip that came with your window repair kit. Place the sticky side on the glass so the window chip is in the exact center of the adhesive strip. Press firmly to ensure that it is stuck to the glass.

3. Peel off the paper backing on the other side of the adhesive strip now stuck to your windshield. Mount the pedestal provided in your kit so it is straight on the adhesive strip and the pedestal is facing straight up. Press around the base of the pedestal to ensure that it sticks securely to the adhesive strip.

4. Remove the plunger of the syringe and add the window chip-filling chemicals provided in the kit. Carefully replace the syringe plunger. Remove the cap of the syringe and you’re ready to start filling the hole.

5. Insert the end of the syringe into the pedestal sticking out of the window chip. Press down on the plunger to insert the chemicals into the hole. Pull up the plunger so the syringe fills with air. Press the plunger back down to add more chemicals to the hole. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

6. Remove the syringe, pedestal and adhesive backing from the window. Use the razor blade to smooth out the surface of the glass to make the newly filled hole the same level as the rest of the glass.

It is always best to take care of chips as soon as you become aware of them as a small chip that is ignored and left un-repaired can escalate into expensive situations where you could need to replace your entire window. Small chips not only can be easily repaired by professionals but also in most cases a good window repair job looks just like new.

The common fallacy about cracks on the car window is that they always need replacement. But the car windows cracks can be classified in two major types: repairable and irreparable cracks.

If you got a crack on your window that is not from any edge part of the glass, it can be repaired. The Bulls eye, half moon, star break and combination are some examples of repairable cracks. Bull’s eye and half moon cracks should not be larger than a quarter coin, while the star break and combination should not be larger than the size of a credit card. When you place a credit card on top of the cracked portion and you still see portion of the crack still showing that means it is preferred to replace them. Irreparable are those measuring larger than 24 inches in size. It is also not advisable to repair multiple cracks on a single glass surface or those with deep cracks that looks like a gaping holes, then you would need to replace the complete window.

Some auto parts stores are selling repair kits and they contain a bridge, piston, plastic film, small blade and a tube of resin You can also have these tools come in handy to repair cracks in glass; a vacuum assisted air pump, a glass drill, an ultraviolet light, razor blade, and glass cleaner.

If you have all the required tools and material you can repair your own cracks yourself. Just follow these procedures.

Clean the surface of the crack with the glass cleaner, using a fine glass drill tool create a bulls eye ring. Then insert the resin using the piston of the bridge, suction the piston over the break on the glass and apply the resin slowly. Wait for it to set under the sun or use a blue UV light in case you are in the garage wait for about 15 minutes for it to harden. After drying, remove the bridge and piston then apply a bead of resin on the crack. Put a film over the resin make sure that there are no air bubbles. Once it dries, remove the remove the plastic resin and use a blade to scrape off the excess resin.

If the crack is large or it’s something you would rather leave to the expert, just go to any auto shop and seek the help of a professional.

When dealing with your cars, some problems are easier to fix than others. For example, a broken headlight is something you can replace effortlessly. It’s a lot more difficult for you to pull large dents out of body panels on your own. Fortunately, broken windows fall into the formers category. With a few simple tools and a little persistence, you can keep the elements on the outside of your car where they belong.

I have come up with these steps on how to easily replace your car windows. Just follow them and you’ll definite be able to replace your window without the help of a skilled technician.

1. Get rid of the largest pieces of glass from the broken window before proceeding. Vacuum any small pieces that you see.

2. Remove the door card, taking care not to puncture or tear the plastic moisture barrier you’ll find underneath. You will likely need at least one screwdriver to remove it, and shop manuals unfortunately don’t usually specify which. The screws themselves will show you whether it’s a flat head or a Phillips, which should guide your process of elimination. Consult your shop manual for any specific directions regarding the door and window device. If any other tools are required, the shop manual should identify. However, it’s highly improbable other tools will be needed for this task. Take care not to rip or tear the door card.

3. Place the door card on your tarp. Draw a rough diagram of the door on a piece of cardboard.

Next, tape any screws, bolts or other hardware you’ve removed from your door card to the cardboard diagram. You’ll use the diagram to place the hardware exactly where it needs to go when reassembling the door. Remove the weather stripping from the top of your door.

4. Vacuum any remaining glass pieces out of the inside of the door. Do the same for the weather stripping.

5. Take note of the location of the clips and bracketry inside the door that will hold your new glass. Replace the weather stripping.

6. Align the new piece of glass with the opening in the weather stripping. Carefully ease the glass down into the channel in the door. Keep a close watch on how it moves down toward your lift mechanism. If anything is blocking the glass from reaching the lift mechanism, ease the glass back out and remove the blockage. Keep attempting to slide the glass into place until you succeed.

7. Test your window to make sure it works correctly before replacing the door card. Make any necessary modification. Replace your door card, and wash all the fingerprints off your new window.
